matt lamination

Matt Lamination

Matt lamination gives an elegant effect that offers great quality for products where image and first impressions mean everything, which is why it is a common choice for many.

Unlike gloss lamination, matt lamination can provide a softer look, as it can produce lower contrast on darker colours. Whilst forming a protective coating over the print, it does not provide the same level of protection as gloss lamination and can be prone to scratching.

Gloss Lamination

With gloss lamination the shine finish gives the artwork a much more striking look, the light reflects off the laminate, and gives colours, in particularly blacks, a richer depth.  Gloss lamination is more high profile, it adds a high gloss sheen often used on brochure covers, menus, magazine covers or presentation folders offering a high impact option.

Gloss lamination is also a durable choice as it repels dirt, scratches and fingerprints with ease. If the laminate does come in contact with dirt, it is easily wiped clean due to its glossy texture.

spot uv business printing

Spot UV Printing

Simply put, spot UV refers to where you apply a UV Varnish (or Coating) to a specific area of your print.

This can be a clear varnish over an image, logo or text which the user will see glinting when the print is tilted towards the light.  It is applied by an additional UV ink tank (clear) on specific areas of the print after the colours have been laid down. The clear “ink” layer is then cured by exposure to a UV lamp.

When spot UV is applied over a matt laminated single colour, text and logos appear as if by magic when the light catches the UV layer.

Wire Bound Booklets

Wire bound booklets are a great way of producing your document in an easy to read document.  Just flick the pages over and they sit flat on your reading surface – just great for presentations, instruction manuals, menu packs, daily diaries – the list is endless.

Be creative with your format.  Portfolios look great when they are printed landscape with the bind on the short left hand side.  Presentations can be produced landscape with the bind on the long top edge, allowing you to present your pitch to your customer  – flipping the slides over the top to reveal the next one.

We can also produce the wire bound document in waterproof plastic coated paper – great for instruction manuals used outside, exposed to the elements.

Just upload your artwork in the page sequence you would like it to be read. Let us know whether you would like your wire bound booklet printed single or double sided.  Please remember the document starts with 5 pages (4 for the covers plus 1 page) and so you just select the total number of pages.  If printing double sided you may need to insert blank pages now and then.

Wire Bound Booklets – in A5, A4 and square formats

Wire bound booklets are a great way of communicating information in an easy to read, compact format.

Booklets also create a more professional impact than just sending out a standard A4 document printed on a standard business printer.  Take advantage of a heavier weight of paper / card for the cover, and add some special touches as lamination or spot UV to really lift your wire bound booklet and make it want to be read.

The great advantage of a wire bound booklet is that it opens flat and hence it is a fantastic format for instruction / training manuals as well as presentations / portfolios. Use professional pictures and graphics to help navigate around your booklet and make it easy to read.  Mixing pages with full flood (edge to edge) images opposite pages with text will increase the readers interest, inviting them to continue turning the pages.  Being consistent with your branding will reinforce your corporate identity.

If you have your design all laid up then great, simply upload your file with your order when you have chosen your options and your wire bound booklets will be on their way in a jiffy.

What is wire binding?

Wire binding is the standard method of binding a multi page document.

The wires are pre-formed and require each of the pages to be punched using a special hole punch.  The spacing of the square holes is dependent on the number of pages you need to bind.  Thicker documents have the holes spaced further apart (2:1 pitch) and thinner documents have the punched holes closer (3:1 pitch).

As a rule of thumb 3:1 pitch means 3 punched holes per inch and 2:1 pitch means 2 punched holes per inch. 3:1 pitch wire is used for smaller documents no larger than 120 pages (70gsm) and 2:1 pitch wire is used generally used for larger documents of up to 325 pages (70gsm).

Wires come in two standard colours - white or black.  However, there are many other colours to choose from by special order.

Once punched, the covers are added to the document with or without an additional acetate cover.  The wire is then inserted into the holes along the binding edge and then physically squeezed by a press to close the wire so that the pages are held captive in the bind.

What is the maximum number of pages you can use wire binding?

The technical spec of the Renz wire binds that we use specify a maximum number of pages of 325 pages at 70gsm thickness using a 2:1 wire pitch.

However, if you use 80gsm or 100gsm paper then the thickness of the document increases and the number of pages we can bind reduces.

In practical terms probably 250 pages is the realistic limit, but obviously, if it is printed double sided, then your document could be as large as 500 pages!

We have set the maximum number of pages on this site to 128 pages (256 double sided) as the majority of our orders are under this amount.  However, please email us for pricing on thicker documents.
